What people are saying about this book:

Required Reading: A Book Only a Complete Idiot Would Ignore

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Saving the Environment, by Greg Pahl, Alpha Books, 2001 is the latest chapter in the omnipresent series of Dummies/Complete Idiots guide books that cover every subject under the sun. Like it's bookish brethren, you'll find it has the same user-friendly layouts and graphics, the same breezy tone, and the same short-burst information presentation that have made these books a publishing phenomenon. But don't let that put you off because this is a book with a good deal to offer even the most well-informed enviro. To be sure, you'll find quite familiar sections on all the well-worn subjects like global warming, energy use, recycling, pollution, etc., but look deeper and you'll also find a good deal more in the form of refreshingly insightful content that notably sets this book apart from the pack.

The first thing we noticed was that the subjects addressed go well beyond the usual. The issue of "the environment" isn't a simple one and to that end the volume, unlike most, admirably addresses its less obvious aspects like the influence of TV, overconsumption, overpopulation, sprawl, social justice, corporate subsidies, factory farming and others factors whose links to our current ecological dilemmas tend to be overlooked. These are important connections to make and, in spite of the book's title, they are not ignored in the name of dumbing down. Also of great interest is the vast wealth of up-to-date statistics, facts, tips, and useful strategies that are sprinkled liberally on nearly every page. Providing satisfying food for surprisingly serious thought, this information is a goldmine of fascinating data for even the most hardened among us. In short, this title has all that you'd expect from a general environmental guidebook and a whole lot more. It may be a Complete Idiot's Guide, but it's remarkably complete, and so deserves to be read by more than just idiots."
